In 1960 Jacques Piccard and Donald Walsh took the 'Trieste' and dived to the bottom of the Marianas Trench, 37,791 ft below the sea. Research has been ongoing to correct the flaws in the 'Trieste' so that such deep dives can be repeated. Trials for the new Deep Flight submersibles are planned for 1995.
