Norwegian lore holds that 800 years ago during a bitter civil war, two birkebeiner warriors skied 50 kilometers through the rugged forests and mountains of their homeland, carrying infant Prince Haakon to safety and helping to launch a nation.

On Saturday, a Madison youngster will help re-create that historic moment when he is ushered down Hayward's Main Street to the finish of the 35th annual American Birkebeiner cross-country ski marathon.

Bjorn Moede Rogall, who just celebrated his first birthday, will be nestled inside the fur ...
