With the commercial wild-abalone fishery closed, the diving ban implemented, a court judgment still pending, increased collaborative compliance efforts, and signs of desperation from poachers seeping through, it becomes important to take stock of why our country has to take such drastic measures to protect a most valuable marine resource in South African waters, allowing it to grow and reproduce.
