FOR years, loggers in Kalimantan followed a simple rule when cutting down trees: get 'em young and treat 'em rough. After the trees were felled, clearings were burnt off ready for replanting. Then came the fires of 1994, which destroyed some 5m hectares (about 12.5m acres) of trees, due to a combination of fire clearance, a dryer than usual dry season, slash-and-burn farming and tropical storms. Ash rained down on Indonesia's neighbours, Singapore and Malaysia. They were not pleased.
