Doris Humphrey was a startlingly original dancer and choreographer in the 1920s and 30s. She had her own company in New York City with Charles Weidman received high critical acclaim. She stayed active in dance after arthritis ended her performing career.
A century ago, Horace Buckingham Humphrey and his wife, Julia Wells Humphrey, announced to the world the birth of a daughter destined to become a new kind of artist in the country where her ancestors had lived for generations.
