I. INTRODUCTION

Recently, several scholars have attempted to bring the works of Johannes Althusius to the foreground to provide an alternative to Jean Bodin's concept of sovereignty (Keane 2003: 125; Benoist 2000a: 45). An important reason for this is that states today are called to divide and share their sovereign powers with supranational authorities, which seems to make Bodin's model obsolete.
