Michael Gauvreau's essay is, I think, a particularly insightful analysis of what happened in Quebec. It is not so simple a matter, as old-fashioned secularization theorists would have it, of "confronting modernity." Nor was it just a matter of escaping from an oppressive and stifling cultural-political hegemony. Nor was it a case of the putative "renewal" mandated by the Second Vatican Council running amok.
