'The Task' by William Cowper is shown as his attempt to obtain the salvation he did not receive in life. Cowper had earlier converted to Calvinist Evangelicalism while confined in an asylum in 1764, believing that salvation can be gained through conversion. However, Cowper lost his salvation by renouncing his faith after a dream in which God supposedly rejected his plea for salvation.
