Twentieth century lesbian and feminist construct of the nineteenth century as an Edenic age for romantic friendship between women is not totally accurate. Examination of the various discourses extant at the time, ranging from the advice manuals to fictional work, show that such a relationship, though not as virulently attacked as in the present time, had already been viewed as something pathological.
