ANY NEW BOOK OF POEMS by Seamus Heaney is an event. He makes us aware, as only a genuine poet can do, of the rich vocabulary of the English language, with its main roots in Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Greek, and Latin, and its feelers reaching out into almost every other language, major or minor. English is the world's language, now, with a wider audience than even medieval Latin once had, and Heaney ably exploits its resources.
