In the United States, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection occurs in approximately 1 in 150 live births (1), leading to permanent disabilities (e.g., hearing loss, vision loss, and cognitive impairment) in approximately 1 in 750 live-born children (2). A common mode of CMV transmission to a pregnant woman is through close contact with infected bodily fluids such as urine or saliva, especially from young children (3).
