FIRST-time mums feel alone, isolated and frightened in the early stages of giving birth because of a lack of facilities in Irish maternity wards.

A study also found many mothers said their need for pain relief went unnoticed.

The research, carried out by Trinity Midwifery doctoral student Patricia Larkin, is to be released at a conference this week.

It recommends designated ante-labour wards in all maternity hospitals ...
