Coffee is more than of passing importance in Ethiopia, both economically and culturally. It can be said that no where else does coffee have the same resonance as it does in Ethiopia. Pride is one factor -- the nation regards itself as the fatherland of coffee -- it being widely accepted that the coffee tree is indigenous to the Ethiopian highland forests. But money figures even more prominently. Economically, coffee accounts for 60% of the nation's foreign exchange earnings.
