DETROIT _ Some high-tech machines have made weekly trips to the grocery store a lot more exciting for 5-year-old Cierra Legrone.

Growing ranks of Detroit-area children, along with parents and grocers, are finding fascination in automated, laser-equipped recycling machines _ those crunching, beeping thingamajigs that spit out receipts for refundable containers.
