Biology: understanding culture, technology, and politics in 'Biological Century.'

Imagination at the end of 18th-century was fired up by the technological and ethical implications of two emerging sciences: chemistry and physics. Here at the end of the 19th, biology is now where the two sciences were. Genetics engineering has gained ground, beginning the Biological Century with possibilities from the noble to the horrific and the choices are ours.

As the millennium approaches like an overloaded freight train--fat with metaphor--we shall see many attempts to peer beyond the veil of that magical number, 2000. (For purists, 2001.) Many try to do linear extrapolations ...
