The sense of opportunity and freedom on the American frontier of the 1800s was explored in music and dance by the late composer Aaron Copland and dancer/choreographer Martha Graham in their "Appalachian Spring."

The Library of Congress commissioned "Appalachian Spring," and the ballet premiered in the fall of 1944.

"It was a contribution to the war effort," says Janet Eilber, artistic director of the Martha Graham Dance Company and one of its former dancers.
