Octave Mirbeau's 'Le Jardin des supplices' describes a poet's journey to China in the company of Clara and the poet's subsequent realization that sadism and sexual aberrations are acceptable. Unlike Mirbeau's 'Sebastien Roch,' the novel does not disguise the descent into corruption, decadence and greed of society. Published in 1899, it leads one into a tour of a Chinese torture garden, the place of Clara's death, as it strives to look for something out of nothing.
