Music should have no immunity against sociological analysis. It cannot be completely separated from politics and sociology; in fact, music becomes more pleasurable when imbued with social and political meaning. Thus, Charles Rosen's criticisms concerning 'new musicologists' are unfounded. Rosen denounces these socially conscious scholars for bringing musicology into the worlds of literature, history and politics.
