1. Introduction
Monitoring, diagnosis and control of machine tools are very important for efficient manufacturing. State variables have to be continually monitored; the causes of anomalies, if any, have to be quickly identified; and the control variables (parameters) have to be rapidly varied in order to bring the system back to the desired operating characteristics. The underlying relationships between the state variables and the control parameters must therefore be identified as a first step.
