Early Western historians considered Asian political and economic systems as backward and corrupt. These historians overlooked the uniqueness of the Asian systems because they used Western models in gauging the political maturity and economic advancement of early Asian societies. In their assumptions of superiority, they failed to see the strengths and continuities of Asian political and economic systems. Responsible scholarship, however, should consider such strengths and continuities.
