Before ``The Big Chill'' and ``thirtysome-thing,'' before use of the terms ``yuppies'' and ``baby boomers'' spiked and then flat-lined, there were Ann Beattie characters: young, gifted and bleak.

That was then, and this is ``Another You,'' Beattie's new book just published by Knopf.

Her 10th book and fifth novel focuses on Marshall Lockwood, an English professor at a New Hampshire college, and his wife, Sonja, a real estate agent having a secret affair with her boss.
