The Food Guide Pyramid is failing to improve the diets of Americans. Many simply do not understand how it works. The guide also has several flaws, such as not accounting for differences between types of fat and fresh and processed vegetables.

In April 1992, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) launched the Food Guide Pyramid, designed to promote overall good health based on nutritional goals. But merely issuing the Pyramid is insufficient to change diets. Half of adults responding to an offer for the pyramid admitted that they did not know how to use it.
