A QUANTUM leap is a much-abused figure of speech. In common parlance it has come to mean a near-revolutionary change. For physicists, who invented the term, it is the opposite: the smallest amount of change possible. As such, true quantum leaps usually require sophisticated equipment to detect. So it came as a surprise to Nico Garcia, of the Autonomous University of Madrid, to be told by a post-doctoral researcher that the high-vacuum chamber and ultra-sharp electrode he had been using to study the quantised flow of electricity were superfluous.
