The observance of World Day of the Sick was instituted by Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1992, designating February 11 - the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes - as the date for its annual celebration.

The occasion also provides an opportunity for those involved in health care to reflect on the roots of their healing mission and ministry.
