Eurocentrism is a nineties word. It was coined to describe the belief among those of European ancestry that their way of doing things is superior to all others. Eurocentrism created an attitude of mind that governed relations between whites and Native peoples for 500 years. Another word with a lot of syllables is used to describe that -- paternalism. For centuries, Native people were seen by Europeans as simple children who needed the control and guidance of the Great White Father. That attitude has survived among some people in authority right into the 1990s.
