DETROIT--Sept. 20--Some high-tech machines have made weekly trips to the grocery store a lot more exciting for 5-year-old Cierra Legrone.

"It's so much fun!" the Detroit girl said while stuffing pop cans into an automatic recycling machine at a north side Farmer Jack Supermarket. "I love to come here and play."

Growing ranks of Detroit-area children, along with parents and grocers, are finding fascination in automated, laser-equipped recycling machines -- those crunching, beeping thingamajigs that spit out receipts for refundable containers.
