Diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration is the most basic and simplest treatment for the removal of discrete particles suspended in a drinking water supply source. DE filtration is not vulnerable to treatment failures and filter breakthroughs associated with Cryptosporidiosis since it does not require coagulation pretreatment. Diatomaceous earth filters are generally classified as precoat filters, defined by the scheme of using the powder-like filter media applied as a precoat to woven cloth covered septa.
