Bacteremia carries a high fatality rate, particularly in elderly patients. However, the decision to perform blood cultures for bacteremia is often a subjective and difficult clinical decision. Pfitzenmeyer and colleagues evaluated potential clinical predictors of bacteremia to determine when blood cultures should be ordered.

The study group included 438 patients in whom 558 episodes of bacteremia were suspected. All patients were 62 years of age or older. Blood cultures were performed for all study subjects.
