The ability of forests to act as carbon dioxide sinks could be higher than previously thought. New research reveals that high atmospheric levels of C[O.sub.2] bring about changes in the mixture of soil microbes, improving plants' ability to sequester C[O.sub.2].

Plants grow faster at higher C[O.sub.2] concentrations but this effect is generally seen as temporary because it is limited by nitrogen in the soil. In a new study at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), at an experimental trembling aspen forest in Wisconsin, US, such a limitation has not yet been observed.
