In this sequel to French Presence in the South Pacific, 1842-1940, Robert Aldrich has performed a complex and difficult task extraordinarily well. He analyzes the impact of "French political, economic and strategic action" upon the New Hebrides - which became the independent state of Vanuatu in 1980 - and the territoires d'outre-mer (New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and Wallis and Futuna) and evaluates their roles in France's international policy.
