They were strange bedfellows - friends in a town where, as the saying goes, if you need a friend, get a dog.
One was a liberal Democratic congressman from San Diego; the other a rock-ribbed Republican serving the Nixon and Ford administrations.
Their friendship, formed in Washington, D.C., grew over the years and may result in San Diego County becoming an international telecommunications and information center.
The Democrat is Lionel Van Deerlin, now retired from Congress but keeping active as a columnist for the San Diego Union-Tribune.
