There is much to recommend Said Aburish's angry polemic The Rise, Corruption and Coming Fall of the House of Saud (St, Martin's, 328 pp). Informed books on Persian Gulf countries are few and far between and only a handful of useful volumes on Saudi Arabia have been published in the last decade. Most books on the House of Saud have been little more than hagiographies penned by courtiers or retained scribes who have had much to lose by writing anything critical of the gulf's controlling -- and preeminently cruel -- royal family.
