Jeronymo Jose de Mello was a tinker (latoeiro) resident in Rio de Janeiro during the second half of the nineteenth century. (1) One of the thousands of skilled Portuguese immigrants to arrive in Brazil's capital in this period, he set up a tinsmith shop sometime in the 1850s in the Rua Sao Pedro, just a few blocks to the west of the central business district in an area filled with other artisans and small businesses.
