Years ago, Robert Hughes mocked the Metropolitan Museum's acquisition of Rembrandt s Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (Fig. 1), writing that the publicity surrounding the purchase epitomised 'America's identification of art with treasure'. The $2.3m paid for this masterpiece was unprecedented back in 1961, but Hughes's baritone bluster was a bit overdone.
