Is the election campaign prolonging the wars?

The United States is simultaneously waging two wars and a presidential election. The current Afghan war has been under way since Oct. 7, 2001, when a U.S.-led force landed to subdue al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.

The much larger Iraq war began March 19, 2003, the day President George W. Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq. The presidential election campaign of 2008 has been under way at least since November 2006 when the midterm ...
