PHILADELPHIA _ It all began when a Syrian farmer complained that his irrigation water from the Euphrates River was disappearing into mysterious sinkholes that had suddenly opened up in the sun-baked earth.

Slowly, Richard L. Zettler, a University of Pennsylvania archaeologist working near the site, lowered a graduate student down one of the holes.

The tombs that the student discovered that day have now led to a treasure trove of human remains and artifacts found in nearby burial grounds that may shed considerable light on human life during the Early Bronze Age about 4,500 years ...
