Kant on the possibility of thought: universals without language. (Immanuel Kant)

David Hume questioned the rationality of the concept of causation, or the notion that cause is necessarily followed by an effect. Hume's claim that cause and effect phenomena were nothing but mislabeled common experiences was tantamount to denying that metaphysical concepts such as cause and effect exist. Immanuel Kant tried to reconcile Hume's insight with his own notion of the objectivity and a priori origin of metaphysical concepts by treating metaphysical concepts as logical functions, which means that they are mere ways of synthesizing concepts to form judgments.
