Bookplates, which are slips of paper denoting book ownership, first appeared in Germany where printing from movable type was invented. The first bookplates were made from wood engraving and incorporated designs based on heraldry. Later bookplates were made using copper-engraving, steel-engraving, lithography, etching, photography and other art media. Collecting bookplates that use motifs from earth science may be interesting for collectors of minerals and mineralogy books.
