Americans have a huge reason to celebrate! The Grand Canyon became a national monument 100 years ago. A national monument is a protected area in the United States.

A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides. The Grand Canyon is in northwestern Arizona. It covers more than 1 million acres. The canyon is 6,000 feet deep at its deepest point.

Experts want to make sure the canyon lasts for hundreds of years. They work to preserve, or save, the area. "In the last 100 years, we've made good progress ... to protect the place," researcher Chris Mandrick ...
