That plaque at Berwick railway station - what is story behind it?

THIS plaque hangs above the platform stairs at the railway station. Have you ever wondered about the story that lies behind it?
It began with a royal succession crisis and, in common with most such crises, this one was caused by a death, that of Alexander III of Scotland in 1286. On a foul March night and against all good advice Alexander set out to cross the Forth on horseback from Queensferry, near Edinburgh. He didn't make it. The following morning he was found dead on the shore, his neck broken after being thrown from his horse.
