Two bronze herms: questions of mass production in antiquity. (sculpture)

Identical bronze sculptures dating from the Greco-Roman period may actually be casts of the same model since they contain the same decorative details and are made of essentially the same mixture of metals. The bronze herm recovered from Tunisia has softer features that may be attributed to aging, while the one in the Getty Museum collection has been well preserved. The Mahdia herm has been attributed to Boethos of Kalchedon, and analysis of the details on the Getty herm may confirm its manufacture by the same artist.
