James Ensor's 'Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889': technical analysis, restoration and reinterpretation.

Restoration work on James Ensor's painting 'Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889' revealed the traditional methods Ensor employed in making the work. While the painting has been hailed as a piece of modernist art, it actually uses compositional devices, underdrawing and a color palette that is taught in traditional painting schools. In addition, the group of faces in the foreground has been recognized as caricatures of Ensor's contemporaries, including the writer Marquis de Sade.
