This brief monograph presents a favorable picture of Peter III and his brief reign. Traditional views of this unfortunate monarch derived largely from the biased memoirs of Catherine II, his wife and successor, and from those who helped her overthrow Peter. Considering Peter III an intelligent, rationalistic ruler and a major reformer of Russian institutions, Carol S.
