Readers will find this book by Stephen S. Large a readable account, clearly thought out and well written. Although its facts are familiar and arguments not very original, it is a useful work. The author intertwines the life and fate of "the longest-reigning Japanese monarch" with major political events of the Showa era concisely and hones fly. Hence this is not just "a political biography" but also a short political history of modern Japan from the 1920s to the 1980s. Ample information is provided for readers to come to conclusions other than the author's own.
