John C. Fremont was a Union general during the American civil war who earned the distinction of first issuing an edict of emancipation from slavery. His order releasing the slaves of rebel Missourians antedated that of Pres. Lincoln's famous edict. Fremont's achievement has not been given much importance by historians, however.
