The University of Cuzco in Peru became a central force in reviving the historical and cultural heritage of the country in the early part of the 20th century. The institution rose from its disadvantaged position in the 19th century when it suffered from a lack of financial resources and trained teachers. The university since then strove to awaken the interest of Peruvians in their rich historical past encompassing such eras as that of the Incas and the immediate colonial past.
