"Do birds have tongues?"
My 8-year-old asked this question as she watched a flicker eating suet at our backyard feeder.
Yes, birds have tongues, but they aren't like ours. There are as many tongue designs as there are kinds of birds, each adapted to a different feeding strategy.
Seed-eating songbirds like finches and sparrows use their tongues almost like fingers, manipulating a seed into the correct position, cracking it open with their bills, then plucking the meat out with their tongues.
