Cranford is now a major television drama - but did its famous author have links to Calderdale?

THE fictional town of Cranford has been brought to life on our TV screens to make compulsive Sunday night viewing.

The lavish BBC costume drama has been adapted from author Elizabeth Gaskell's well known novel into a five-part series featuring a star-studded cast, including Dame Judi Dench, Francesca Annis and Michael Gambon.

Cranford in the 1840s is a small Cheshire market town on the cusp of great change.
