THE world's most feted conductor returns to his home city - not once, but twice - to help set the quality seal on Capital of Culture.

Sir Simon Rattle, who started out attending Saturday morning Music Box sessions at the Bluecoat, is now director of the renowned Berlin Philharmonic.

The maestro brings his players in September (for one of only two UK appearances) to perform Wagner's Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, and Messiaen's massive Tur-angalila Symphony.
