A CLASH between the Afghan government and its western paymasters lastnight threatened to blow the lid on a murky world of espionage and shadymiddlemen.

Officials in Kabul accused two diplomats threatened with expulsion of passingfunds to Islamic insurgents targeting British forces in Helmand province.

The diplomatic row flared amid reports that MI6 agents had previously held atleast six rounds of talks with Taliban commanders.
